Queensland's Matt Schubring fought off a high quality field to win the richest FMX competition in the Southern Hemisphere- the $20,000 Freestyle Sports Open held on the picturesque shores of Lake Karapiro on the North Island of New Zealand

Up against the likes of Blake "Bilko" Williams and Cam Sinclair from Australia and Kiwi's Nick Franklin, Luke Smith, Luke Price and Levi Sherwood it was always going to be a difficult event to win.

After the first days competition Bilko had a narrow lead but a determined Schubring put in some of the best riding of his life to win the $5500 first prize. Bilko held on to second place with Franklin third, Sinclair fourth, Smith fifth and Luke Price sixth.

Other highlights including best whip winner Luke Smith landing his first ever backflips onto dirt and some huge crashes which amazingly no one was hurt in.

Also at the event were some of the worlds best wakeboarders and some high quality BMX dirt riders including "Cousin" Jed Mildon who will feature on the site soon

The event was run by first time promoter Lawrence Perkins and his sister "Scary' Mary Perkins who also rides FMX herself. Both can be congratulated on putting on one of the best events ever.

The best of the photos from this event can be seen in the next issue of Freerider MX while the epic video footage will be shown on the next Homegrown Manaics double DVD.
