New Zealand FMX Freeride Tour Begins

Story and Photos by Holtzy

It’s that time of year again when HGMtv travels to the home of epic natural terrain FMX freeriding- New Zealand. This time in conjunction with the Bible of FMX- Freerider MX.

This year I joined forces with Freerider MX editor Simon Makker and their video guru- Jade Foggo to once again explore the North Island for as many big natural terrain hits as possible.

After just two days on the road the boys can claim a couple of jumps over 100ft and plenty of other cool tech stuff as well as visiting a couple of prime MX tracks.

First on the list was a morning at Simon Makker’s parents place near Hamilton with new NZ FMX young gun- Levi Sherwood and top junior MX racer -Johnny Phillips. There was a couple of cool jumps including a 100ft step down and a wicked hip jump perfect for whips and Levi even managed a couple of seat grabs before he aggravated an injury from a crash the week before.

Later that day we went to Peter “Broxy” Broxholms epic MX track located at the bottom of a beautiful valley near Tauranga. Broxy trains budding young NZ racers and this track is easily the most beautiful home track I have ever seen.

Unfortunatly Broxy had just broken his wrist coming up short on a big triple but the real bonus was the discovery of 11yr old Haki Waller who is unbelievable on his KX85. This kid races fast, has sick bike skills and is totally fearless. No question he is a real star of the future.

Day two saw us journey to the awful sulfur smelling town of Rotorua and Johnny Phillips home track. Johnny is the brother of Michael Phillips who is one of NZ’s fastest MX racers and the boys have a sick track which has already been used for national events.

The talent list on the track included Haki, the Phillips brothers, Levi, and FMX queen Mary Perkins. After some fast track work it was time to find some tech FMX style jumps. There was a couple of cool step up and step down jumps but the last jump was the best- a super fast 100ft+ jump that everyone ended up hitting (even Haki who blew everyone away. Not bad for a 11yr old).

Next on the list is a visit to Mary Perkins home jumps, the famous Taupo MX track and visit to the epic all natural 180ft table top made famous in Homegrown Maniacs 3 and 4- My all time favourite FMX jump. Cant wait……
